Official records remain with the Carter County or Kentucky office that made or maintains them. Court documents go through the Circuit Court Clerk, booking information through the detention center, agency reports through the investigating department, and statewide criminal-history requests through Kentucky State Police.

This Is Not a Government Office. Carter County Criminal History is privately operated. It cannot retrieve an official record, conduct a government background check, change or remove a record, or receive an expungement filing. Those services must come from the responsible public office.

Need an Official Record?

Choose the custodian based on the record being requested:

  • Court proceedings and dispositions: use the criminal court case records route or ask the Carter Circuit Court Clerk
  • State criminal-history records: follow the current process from the Kentucky State Police Criminal Identification and Records Branch
  • Sheriff or police reports: ask the Carter County Sheriff, Grayson Police, Olive Hill Police, or KSP office that created the report
  • Bookings and present jail custody: call Carter County Detention Center at (606) 475-1606
  • City incident records: direct the request to the city police department rather than assuming the sheriff has a copy
  • Kentucky expungement filings: submit the proper documents to the clerk for the court that handled the case

For a sheriff-created record, reach the Carter County Sheriff at 300 W. Main Street, Grayson, KY 41143, (606) 474-5616. Posted hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., plus the last Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to noon. District and Circuit Court files are held by the Carter Circuit Court Clerk at the Justice Center, 100 E. Main Street, Grayson, (606) 474-5191. County-posted clerk hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with Saturday hours listed as 9:00 a.m. to noon. Confirm Saturday access before traveling.
